I'm working on so many different writing projects these days. I'm retired from the world of business, so I have time to experiment. I'm like a child, running from one toy to another in a preschool classroom. Once a day, usually in the afternoon, I recall Dr. Johnson's famous statement: "No man but a blockhead ever wrote except for money." I used to write for money, but now I write as part of enjoying life. Writing is like knitting or gardening now. Still, the idea of writing for free is a bit irritating to me, after all those years of getting paid for it. So, one solution I've come up with is to write super short. That way, I spend as little unpaid time as possible to produce lots of finished work. I realize there is a gigantic logical fallacy here—something akin to, "we lose money on every sale, but we'll make it up in volume." But the super-short writing approach comforts me nonetheless. Hence, the Petite Poems Project. Nothing longer than 17 syllables, over and out. I'll be putting these up over the next couple of months. Maybe, after that, I won't feel so ashamed that I am writing for free and violating Dr. Johnson's maxim.
